I am participating in The Vagina Monologues because I have two daughters. I am participating because I have had to explain what female genital mutilation is to my daughters and watch their faces recoil in horror and fear that anyone would do that to a part of a woman's body. I am participating because I have had to justify teaching my daughters the word "vagina" for a part of their body -- other mothers found it inappropriate to teach young girls that word! I am doing this because I want my daughters to grow up proud and fearless and secure in their own bodies.
